Phishing-Resistant MFA: A Practical Business Guide
How business leaders can evaluate passkeys, security keys, rollout priorities, recovery paths, and user adoption without treating MFA as a checkbox.
Start with the attack path
Traditional approval prompts can still be abused through fake sign-in pages, repeated push requests, or social engineering. A better discussion starts with which roles, systems, and actions would cause the most damage if an account were taken over.
Prioritize the highest-impact accounts
Begin with administrators, finance, executives, remote-access users, and anyone who can change payment details or security settings. A staged rollout creates room to test devices, recovery, and support before expanding.
Design recovery before enrollment
Lost devices and employee transitions are normal operations. Define spare authenticators, identity checks, temporary-access procedures, ownership, and audit logging before the first enrollment campaign.
Measure adoption, not announcements
Track enrollment, failed sign-ins, exceptions, recovery requests, and unsupported workflows. The goal is a control people can use consistently, not a policy that exists only in a presentation.
Action checklist
- Identify privileged and payment-sensitive accounts
- Choose supported phishing-resistant methods
- Document enrollment and recovery
- Pilot with a representative user group
- Review exceptions and legacy authentication
