How Cloud Computing Will Soon Support Society's Basic Functions

Cloud computing has been around for a while now, but the potential for its use is just beginning to be uncovered. It serves as a solution for companies looking for a place to unload massive amounts of data for storage and it provides a variety of software and networking options for business and personal needs, but its impact on society as a whole is just getting revved up.

Cloud computing will likely become the very foundation of how society functions in a fully digitized world. There are a few major areas where you can see how this will occur in the near future:

Supporting infrastructure:The cloud’s computing power will be harnessed to build better, more efficient cities. From smart elevators to public transportation and power plants, the ability to gather data on how these services are best utilized will be enhanced by the cloud’s ability to analyze and act on that data.

The cloud will also continue to transform business in bigger ways. Not only small-scale benefits, like cost savings in a subscription model or a better user experience at individual companies, but in the innovation and disruption of entire industries. For instance, consider an airline where all baggage, maintenance, refueling, and cabin cleaning are cloud-enabled, so that flight delays become rare. In another example, a banking cloud could analyze and examine thousands of bank transactions per second to all but eliminate fraud.

Managing data:Currently, one of the drivers for adopting cloud technology is the ability to handle the large amounts of data that companies collect. The future of cloud computing is not just data storage, but the ability to go beyond storage and analysis and utilize data to predict future behaviors. This would enable companies to offer products to customers before the customer even realizes they were going to shop for that item. While some companies are using data to make recommendations now, this ability will get more fine-tuned and increase its return on investment.

Artificial intelligence for mobile:Smartphones take in a lot of data, and much of that data is unstructured and a bit difficult to analyze and categorize, such as emails and texts. Even as analysis becomes more advanced, smartphones simply don’t have the computing power to analyze and learn from the data they take in.

That’s where cloud computing comes in, because the ability to handle all of the data in a smartphone and use it to improve the consumer’s experience can be split between the phone and the cloud. While the smartphone can’t handle the heavy-hitting of artificial intelligence, the cloud can.

Autonomous vehicles:This topic has been in the news for a long time, and consumers may be skeptical that the streets will ever be filled with autonomous cars. It’s not too far in the future, though, and cloud computing is the reason you’re likely to see driverless cars soon. The software updates, machine learning, and even videos that will play for passengers will all be streaming from the cloud.
