Tackling Your Digital Transformation Your Way

Posted on November 25, 2019
Including everyone in your organization in digital transformation boosts success rates.

Is digital transformation simply about advanced automation, or is it something more than that? It’s obvious that when you address technology today you’re going to be involved in automation in one way or another, but it’s not necessarily technology that powers transformation.

Rather, most digital transformations going on today involve company leaders driving business initiatives and disseminating tasks down the leadership chain. It wasn’t long ago (and in some situations it might still be the case) that some transformation projects involved various personnel who didn’t know the language used in the process, be it bytes, bits, or terminology used in various architectures. It’s on the system integrators to be the ones pushing what is of operational value that also contributes to the overall business goals of digital transformation.

All Hands on Deck

To raise the chances of pulling off a digital transformation with as few bugs as possible, it’s required that every department within the organization has some part in it. This includes people from IT, supply chain, engineering — anyone that will be impacted should have a role to play. IT and operational technology team members serve a critical role in making sure all players understand what’s involved in the process.

Furthermore, system integrators should be competent in a number of areas, including IT skills and architectures that range from simple to complex. Being up to date on various cyber security issues cannot be discounted here, either, as this has become a must-have component in any digital transformation strategy.

The Importance of APIs

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are often viewed as the foundation of a digital transformation because they allow you to relay your business as a software asset, which connects to other assets. Therefore, this is not something that is an IT-only concern, because every department within your organization can benefit by customizing its API.

You might find that, as you rely more and more on data to develop high-functioning APIs, you also lack the right type of people or infrastructure to make heads or tails of that data. This is where your machine learning APIs can come in handy, but are generally offered by third parties. You can’t expect, unless you’re a heavyweight like Amazon or Google, to build everything in-house.
